Standards in electrical lighting evolved quickly in the 20th century.  Nowadays we won't accept a solitary ceiling fixture, the usual lighting source as late as the 1960's.  In today's kitchen, in fact, we use lighting for general illumination, task lighting and mood, especially in a kitchen that is period inspired.
