About Us

Category: All Category: Lessons

Our story starts in 2003, when founder Brian Faherty discovered a trove of vintage cast-iron glass shade moulds in an abandoned warehouse and restored them back in to production, creating what would become Schoolhouse Electric's inaugural collection.

Since then, we have continued to expand our offerings far beyond lighting to include vintage-inspired lifestyle wares and domestic utility goods for productive, modern lives.

From iconic furniture and lighting to art and analog clocks, many of our products are designed and manufactured within the walls of our century-old brick factory building in our home of Portland, Oregon.

It's here that we work to preserve and carry on the legacy of American craft manufacturing and design.

Our aim is to create the next generation of heirlooms - the kind of pieces your grandchildren will (lovingly) fight over - because something worth owning now is worth owning forever.

Schoolhouse Electric's maker-mindset and rare mix of beautiful yet practical designs have earned us a reputation for quality, craftsmanship and service. In creating long-lasting products made with care, we want to inspire people to buy thoughtfully, cultivate their own collections and create meaningful spaces.

In addition to our online presence, we have two brick and mortar locations on each end of the United States. Our flagship store, factory and headquarters reside in Portland, Oregon and our second store is situated in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City. Take a behind-the-scenes tour of our Portland factory in the video below and meet the people who make Schoolhouse buzz everyday. After that, get an inside look at our clock-making process, as narrated by Schoolhouse founder Brian Faherty.
